Avoiding the diaper cakes...?

Is there a polite way to try to lessen the chances of getting a diaper cake etc. at your baby shower? Would be great except...we are cloth diapering. Can I just let the person throwing the shower know that in case someone asks her for suggestions? I don't mind if we end up with one, we can always donate the diapers or use them in emergencies if we get behind in wash or something, but diaper cakes seem to be the thing now and I don't want to end up with like TEN of them, or something like a diaper genie, when there's plenty of other stuff we could really use. Putting cloth diapers on the registry woud be great...if any of the main places to register carried them, but they don't! Suggestions for the etiquette here?
