I may have been caught running a red light, can i appeal?

i was driving along a dual carriageway yesterday. the traffic lights at the junction turned amber, i was travelling around 40mph and breaked for a second before deciding that i wasnt going to stop in time. so i then carried on driving, i'm not sure if the light was red or if the camera got me. usually i would stop for the lights but the roads were pretty icy and wet so i was a bit worried i would skid or cross the line. if i'm given any penalty points can i appeal? i've only been driving with a full license for 3 months so i dont know much about traffic offences. thanks.
